The Regional Unit of Pella belongs to central Macedonia and it is one of the outlying districts of Greece as it borders with the Republic of Macedonia. It is a region with a lot of mountains (Vorras, Vermio, Paiko etc.) and big plains such as Aridaia (north) and the vast plain of Giannitsa (southeast). The biggest part of the prefecture is covered by arable land, forests and pastures and as a result, the local economy is mainly based on agriculture and animal husbandry.
Even though it is a rather secluded prefecture, Pella attracts many visitors who come here to admire the archaeological sites and the wonderful landscape. The archaeological site of ancient Pella which was the capital of the ancient Macedonian kingdom, and the modern archaeological museum which was founded a few years ago, are of great interest to visitors. Also, the Pozar Baths, the traditional settlement of Ayios Panteleimonas and the ski center at Kaimaktsalan are major tourist attractions, especially during the winter months.
Giannitsa is the largest city and industrial and commercial center with a population of almost 30,000 inhabitants. Other important centers are Edessa, which is a tourist destination, Krya Vrysi,, Aridaia and Skydra.
